Mental Health Support for People with Diabetes

I would like to take this opportunity to offer a support group for people who are living with diabetes during this difficult time. This session will be dedicated towards sharing and discussing any issues or emotions that have emerged as a result of Covid19; how these have affected your diabetes management and how we can set some mindful goals to discover a self-compassionate, self-caring approach to deal with diabetes.

I am an HCPC and Badth registered therapist specialised in Art Therapy. My approach is mindful and creative. If you would like to join me for the session, follow the link on my website, go to ‘Outside the Square’ then click on ‘My Bookings’, you will find all the information there, once you book it, you will receive a Zoom link.

This is my story of Diabetes and Me:

10 years ago, I was diagnosed with T1 Diabetes. In just one moment, my life changed forever. I was 21 weeks pregnant. One day I woke up and my vision had blurred completely. I went for a blood test and that same night I ended up in hospital. I was told at the beginning it was gestational diabetes (very late detected) after birth it developed into type 1, thus became my permanent companion. Three weeks later, I was still hospitalised and my daughter was born, weighing less than a kilo. We remained in the hospital for the following four months going through everything step by step. I had no prior history of diabetes; it was new to me and to make it even worse I completely hate needles. I had to learn about diabetes at the same time I was learning about premature babies. My daughter and I were both fighting, fortunately we both pulled it through.

This is a very short retelling of my story and how diabetes came into my life, it was a complete surprise and it shook me in every way. Ten years after, I am still learning how to cope with the complications entailed by it. My journey has its fair share of ups and downs. It is hard to manage; you need to be resilient and you definitely need support from the people around you. But it has made stronger, as cliché as it sounds! It is part of who I am today. Diabetes affects your mental, physical and social health.

Join me on this ride, you are not alone!
